Things to do in Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada is São Miguel's capital and, with around 68,000 people in the municipality, the largest town in the whole Azores archipelago — a status it only inherited after an earthquake and landslide buried the previous capital, Vila Franca do Campo, in 1522.

João Paulo II airport (PDL) sits just 2-3 km from the centre, so most visits start on foot along the Portas do Mar waterfront, where cruise ships and the marina share the same quay. The historic core is compact: the three black-and-white Portas da Cidade arches, the 16th-century Forte de São Brás, the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião and the Mercado da Graça market are all within a 15-20 minute walk of each other.

On the edge of town, the Gruta do Carvão lava tube (entry around EUR 8) adds an underground detour. There is no train on the island; a rental car is the default way to reach anywhere beyond the centre.
