Things to do in Nordeste

Nordeste is the island's eastern tip, a loop of headland roads rather than one town to park in. The two clifftop viewpoints, Ponta do Sossego and Ponta da Madrugada, sit about 5 km apart and are free to visit, best kept for clear weather since fog is common up here.

The Farol do Arnel lighthouse marks the easternmost point, reached on foot down a steep path. Ribeira dos Caldeirões, a small waterfall park with old watermills, charges a few euros to park and takes under an hour to walk. Inland, Pico da Vara rises to 1,103 m, the island's high point, inside the Serra da Tronqueira reserve.

Fuel stations are scarce on this circuit, so fill up before setting out from Ponta Delgada or Furnas.
