Best Time to Visit São Miguel
São Miguel sits in the middle of the North Atlantic, with a maritime climate where conditions can differ sharply from one side of the island to the other. Summer (June to September) is the busiest and driest season with the warmest sea; spring and autumn bring the strongest whale watching and a greener island, while winter (November to March) is mild but wet and windy, with rain possible any day. The warmest, driest stretch of the year, with hydrangeas in flower, sea temperatures around 22-24°C and the Vila Franca islet boat running — but also the busiest, priciest weeks, especially in July and August.
April and May bring the spring whale migration and a green island, and October stays mild with fewer visitors, though showers and changeable weather are likely, and the thermal pools, caldeiras and tea plantations are open all year.
